Hellenic League Division One West

Trowbridge Town - 2 Cheltenham Saracens - 1

In the second encounter in three weeksTrowbridge gained revenge for being knocked out of the League cup and completed the double over the Saracens to dent the hopes of promotion. Luckily several of the top sides also lost which meant that they have not lost much ground. It looked as though there might be a runaway score when after only two minutes Marcus Finch stooped low to head home for the Saracens but they let the lead slip after only 4 minutes when Ranger scored from close range. The rest of the first half belonged to Trowbridge as they conditioned themselves to playing on Chippenhams ground for the first time. After the interval the Saracens came about deternmined to gain all three points and hit the post twice, had a shot cleared off the line and had several one on one chances which were missed and then the they paid for their mistakes when in the 87th minute they allowed the home side to score when failing to clear the ball out of defence.

Hellenic League Division One West

Tytherington Rocks 6 Cheltenham Saracens - 1

This result was a setback in The Saracens possible promotion hopes against a Bristol team who have never beaten them. In sticky conditions the Saracens found themselves 3 down after only 20 minutes with two goals by Potts and one by Whitecliff. The normal Saracens strong defence was exposed and the players were able to run through into a one on one situation with Ryan Betteridge. After halftime a change in formation by the Saracens to try and recover the match failed and Tytherington scored number 4 after 58 minutes with a header from a corner by S Thompson followed by his brother D Thompson on 65 minutes with a long range shot. The Saracens scored on consolation goal on 82 minutes with a penalty converted by Andy Sherlock.

HELLENIC LEAGUE DIVISION ONE WEST

Cheltenham Saracens - 2 Purton - 2

The Saracens bogey team caused them problems again and managed a creditable draw which kept the Saracens in fourth place in the league. The windy conditions suited the strong visitors and although the Saracens played good controlled football they could only managed to score one goal in the first half with the advantage of the wind.Ryan Oldham cut inside after a good run after 15 minutes to hit a low shot just inside the post.Although they pushed forward continuously in the next 30 minutes they could not break down a resolute Purton defence. The second half was a different story when the long ball tactics with the wind from Purton caused the Saracens defence problems and on 50 minutes a headed goal put them level when they failed to clear at the first attempt.10 minutes later Purton were ahead and looking for their second win of the season when a good ball inside the fullback allowed Halestrop to slot home.A double substitution and change of formation by Gerry Oldham added more impetus to the Saracens play and on 72 minutes they equalised when after a good run by Andy Sherlock John Lund pushed home from his cross. With two minutes remaining the lively new signing from Chipping Norton Andy Varnham was on course to score on his debut but with only the keeper to beat he hit the post.

Cheltenham Saracens 1 Trowbridge Town 0

High flying league leaders Trowbridge suffered their third defeat of the season in a hard fought match at Petersfield Park in difficult playing conditions.A first class save by Ryan Betteridge in the Saracens goal in the 44th minute made sure that there was no score at half time when he just managed to tip a shot from 30 yards over the bar. Most of the match was played in midfield and the competative nature was reflected in three bookings for each team for aggressive tackling. It was in the 80th minute that the deadlock was broken when substitute Ryan Oldham picked up the ball on the half way line beat three players on the run and slipped the ball the Andy Sherlock who passed it into the net. Trowbridge then threw everything forward but the Saracens defence stood firm for three points and a move into fourth spot.

Cheltenham Saracens v Clanfield

The Saracens continued with their good run of league form against a team that always offers difficult opposition and competitive games. This was no exception but the visitors had answer for the Saracens slick football on a sticky pitch in the first 30 minutes. Purton - 0 Cheltenham Saracens - 4

The problems that the Saracens have had with winning at Purton over the years were put to rest in the League Cup on Saturday. They cruised through the match and the scoreline could have been more except for a good display by the Saracens ex-youth team goalkeeper Elliott Seddon. The first goal came after 10 minutes when Luke Tovey went on a characteristic run down the left and scores with a good shot into the corner of the net.The second came on 41 minutes when a good ball by Steve Stroud was collected by Andy Sherlock who made no mistake. The Purton defence could not deal with a through ball by substitute Joe Bermingham which resulted in an own goal after 57 minutes to seal the match but it was Sherlock again who collected a good through ball by John Jenkins to score number four and progress to the next round.

This looked like three points until a defensive error on 62 minutes allowed Lye to score and give Cricklade hope. With the Saracens hanging on to the win a disputed penalty for handball in the 87th minute allowed Cricklade to share the points.
